Home Energy Savings Calculator

The Home Energy Savings Calculator is an illustrative tool for information purposes only. Actual energy savings may vary from the calculator results due to utility costs, weather, lifestyle, equipment efficiency, and implemented household upgrade measures. No representation or warranty is made as to the accuracy or applicability of the results in any particular case. Important Assumptions

The energy savings estimates generated by the calculator are based on the following assumptions and the information provided by the user:

Location Assumptions

- Major cities are determined by a combination of population density and significant differences in heating degree days and cooling degree days.

Building Assumptions

- The calculator assumes a house with 15% window glazing proportionally distributed in an urban setting with the majority of the windows on the north/south axis.
- The calculator assumes the house has 8 foot ceilings, a conditioned basement and attic space.
- Insulation values, airtightness and window efficiencies in the house are estimated using age of house as a proxy based on Canadian and provincial values gathered by Natural Resources of Canada and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Mechanical Assumptions

- Heating Equipment: The age of the equipment is used as a proxy to determine the equipment efficiency. For natural gas, propane and heating oil units' efficiency is measured by Annual Fuel Use Efficiency (AFUE) between 60% and 90%. The electric heating systems (baseboards or furnace) are rated as 100% efficient. Electric heat pumps heating efficiency is determined by Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) between 6.0 and 6.4.
- Water Heating Equipment: The age of the water heating equipment is used as a proxy to determine the equipment efficiency. Water heater efficiencies are measured by Energy Factor (EF). Natural gas, propane or heating oil models with an EF of 0.5 or higher and electric models with an EF of 0.85 or higher due to stand by losses.
- Cooling Equipment: The age of the cooling equipment is used as a proxy to determine the equipment efficiency. Efficiency in central air conditioners is measured by Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) ranging from SEER 8 to13.

Lighting and Appliance Assumptions

- Lighting: Lighting consumption is determined through a combination of the percentage of energy efficient bulbs selected, the conditioned floor area, the number of occupants and the average kWh/yr in a typical Canadian home. Lifestyle, the number of people home during the day or work in the home impact actual consumption.
- Appliances: The efficiency of refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers and clothes washers correlates closely with age. Changes in federal standards regulating appliance efficiency have been used to assume the consumption. Lifestyle, the number of people home during the day or work in the home impact actual consumption.

Water Use Assumptions

- Showerhead Water Use: Annual water use is based on the numbers of occupants, average length of a shower determined at 8.8 minutes and average number of showers taken per year. Showers use roughly 37 percent of the hot water consumption in a home. Low flow fixtures are 7.5 LPM.
- Toilet Water Use: The age of the toilet is used to determine the water use as federal standards have changed to reduce water use. The calculator estimates 4 flushes per day per person, typical of homes where occupants are not home during the day.
- The calculator will make recommendations for conserving water even for users who do not have a water meter and pay a flat rate. The savings are representative of what users would experience if their water was metered.

Upgrade Assumptions

- Upgrade Costs: Upgrade prices are illustrative for information purposes only and may vary due to location. Costs have been estimated based on a typical home depending on the users’ inputs and current pricing including materials and labor. For upgrade items that are commonly installed by the homeowner rather than a trade, such as replacing light bulbs and installing showerheads, only material costs are used. Factors have been determined to address costing due to size, surface area and conditioned area of the home.
- All insulation, window, air sealing and mechanical efficiency upgrades are based on a combination of levels in the 2011 ENERGY Star for New Homes specification and the 2012 Ontario Building Code Energy Conservation Requirements.
- The calculator will not recommend upgrading the heating or cooling system if it is less than 5 years old.

Mortgage Calculation Assumptions

- Calculation results are approximations and for information purposes only and rates quoted are not considered as rate guarantees. The calculations assume all payments are made when due. Calculations assume that the interest rate would remain constant over the entire amortization period, but actual interest rates may vary over the amortization period. Making weekly/biweekly payments will have the effect of making an extra payment every year and will shorten your amortization. All mortgages are subject to applicable credit approval, Scotiabank residential mortgage standards and maximum permitted loan amounts.

Credit Card Calculation Assumptions

- Calculation results are approximations and for information purposes only. Interest is accrued daily and charged based on timely monthly payments. Calculations assume a constant interest rate, simple interest, and monthly payments. Monthly interest rate is calculated by dividing the yearly rate by 12. All credit products are subject to applicable credit approval and maximum loan amounts. The calculations assume all payments are made when due; making biweekly/weekly payments will shorten your term.

Personal Loan Calculation Assumptions

- Calculation results are approximations and for information purposes only. Interest is accrued daily and charged as per the payment frequency. Rates quoted are not considered rate guarantees. Calculations assume that the interest rate will remain constant over the entire amortization/repayment period, but actual interest rates may vary over the amortization period.
